What it is. Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn would live if the death rates at every age in a given year stayed the same for life. It is built from a life table that folds infant, child, adult and old-age mortality into one figure, so a change in deaths at any age moves it. It says nothing about years lived in good health or about differences between regions, income groups or men and women.
Higher is better. Higher is better because a higher figure means people are surviving longer at every stage of life.
