55.2 years
What it is. Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn would live if the death rates of a given year, at every age, applied throughout their life. It is built from age-specific mortality, so deaths in infancy and childhood pull the figure down far more than deaths in old age. It describes a whole population and leaves out the quality of those years, as well as differences between regions, sexes and income groups.
Higher is better. A longer life expectancy means fewer deaths at young ages and better survival through adulthood, so higher is better. Chad's latest figure is 55.2 years for 2024, up from 55.1 years in 2023, a rise of 0.17 years. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 51.3 years in 2015 to a high of 55.2 years in 2024, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range for the period.
Why it matters. At 55.2 years, a typical Chad household can expect to lose breadwinners earlier than households in countries with longer lives, which shortens working careers and puts pressure on family savings and support networks. Employers face a smaller pool of experienced older workers. The state has to direct health spending towards child and maternal survival, since those deaths weigh most on this measure.
