In plain words

2.3% y/y

What it is. Population growth is the yearly percentage change in the total number of people living in Guinea. It combines births, deaths and migration into one rate. Between head counts the underlying totals rest on estimates. The rate says nothing about age mix, where people live or how well they are served.

Neither way is good in itself. Faster growth adds workers and customers but stretches schools, clinics and jobs, while slower growth eases that pressure and leaves fewer young workers later on. The right pace depends on whether services and employment keep up. The latest figure is 2.3% y/y for January 2025, down from 2.4% y/y a year earlier, a fall of 0.09 percentage points. It is the lowest reading since 2016 and sits at the bottom of that range. The top of the range was 2.6% y/y in January 2016.

Why it matters. At 2.3% y/y, Guinea keeps adding children who need school places and young adults who need work. Firms gain a growing pool of workers and buyers. The state has to expand classrooms, health care, water and power each year just to keep service levels where they are. The slight easing since 2016 gives that task a little more room.
