In plain words
2.1% y/y
What it is. Population growth is the yearly change in the number of people living in a country. It combines births, deaths and net migration. Annual figures are usually estimates projected forward from census counts and survey data, so they move smoothly and are revised when new counts arrive. The measure says nothing about age mix, where people live or how well they live.
Neither way is good in itself. Faster growth brings more workers, customers and future taxpayers, and it also raises demand for schools, clinics, housing and jobs. Slower growth eases that pressure and leaves a smaller base of young people entering the workforce later. Liberia's latest figure is 2.1% y/y for January 2025, down from 2.2% y/y a year earlier, a fall of 0.07 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 1.9% y/y in 2017 to a high of 2.2% y/y in 2023, so the current reading sits near the top of that range.
Why it matters. At this pace Liberia adds a sizeable number of people every year who need school places, health care, food and work. The state has to expand services each year just to keep coverage where it is, and firms face a steadily growing pool of job seekers and customers. The next annual reading will show whether the slight easing continues.
