In plain words
21.6 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before turning five, counted per 1,000 live births. It summarises the risks of the newborn period, infancy and early childhood in a single figure, so it responds to maternal care, nutrition, vaccination, clean water and the treatment of infections. Stillbirths fall outside it because it begins at live birth, and it records deaths only, so children who survive with illness or poor growth do not appear in it.
Lower is better. Each point lower means fewer children dying before their fifth birthday, so a falling figure is an improvement. Algeria's latest figure, for 2024, is 21.6 per 1,000 live births, against 22 per 1,000 live births a year earlier. That is a fall of 1.8%. Since 2015 the measure has ranged between 24.9 per 1,000 live births in 2015 and 21.6 per 1,000 live births in 2024. The latest reading is therefore the lowest in that span.
Why it matters. At 21.6 per 1,000 live births, a small but real share of Algerian newborns still die before their fifth birthday, and each family affected bears that loss directly. For the state, the figure is a gauge of how well maternity wards, vaccination programmes and primary clinics are reaching households. A further decline from the 2024 level would show up first in the next annual reading.
