In plain words
64.5 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before reaching the age of five, expressed per 1,000 live births. It combines the risks a child faces from birth through early childhood, so it responds to newborn care, infectious disease, nutrition and access to clinics. Only deaths are counted, so illness and disability among children who survive fall outside it. The result is one national average, which can hide differences between regions and households.
Lower is better. Every death counted here is a child lost before a fifth birthday, so a lower figure means more children survive their early years. The latest figure, for 2024, is 64.5 per 1,000 live births, against 66.5 per 1,000 live births a year earlier, a fall of 3%. Since 2015 the highest figure was 85.5 per 1,000 live births, recorded in 2015. The 2024 figure is the lowest in that span, so the one-year direction and the longer trend point the same way.
Why it matters. At 64.5 per 1,000 live births, a family in Côte d'Ivoire still faces a real chance of losing a young child. For the state, this level sets the workload for maternity wards, vaccination programmes and village clinics. The drop from 85.5 per 1,000 live births in 2015 gives health planners a benchmark to check against each new annual estimate.
