In plain words
64.8 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before their fifth birthday, expressed per 1,000 live births. It combines deaths in the first month, the rest of infancy and early childhood into one rate, so it responds to maternal health, nutrition, vaccination, clean water and access to clinics. Because it is a single national rate, it leaves out differences between regions, between rural and urban families and between causes of death.
Lower is better. A lower rate means fewer children die in their first five years, so every fall is a direct gain for child survival. Cameroon's latest figure, for 2024, is 64.8 per 1,000 live births, down from 67 per 1,000 live births a year earlier, a fall of 3.3%. That is the lowest reading since 2015, the start of the window. The highest in that span was 88.5 per 1,000 live births in 2015, so the rate has come down steadily over the period.
Why it matters. About 65 of every 1,000 children born in Cameroon die before their fifth birthday, so child loss remains a real risk for many families. The fall since 2015 shows that health services and household conditions have improved. For the state, the current level keeps pressure on newborn care, vaccination and primary clinics, which are where further reductions would come from.
