In plain words
47.1 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before the fifth birthday, expressed per 1,000 live births. It follows a birth cohort through the risks of the newborn period, infancy and early childhood, so it responds to maternity care, vaccination, nutrition and infection control all at once. Stillbirths are left out because only live births are counted, and children who survive with poor health do not appear in it.
Lower is better. Each death before the age of five is a loss to a family, so a lower rate means more children reach school age. Burundi's latest figure is 47.1 per 1,000 live births in 2024, down from 48.7 per 1,000 live births a year earlier, a fall of 3.3%. That is the lowest reading since 2015, when the rate stood at 66.9 per 1,000 live births. The rate has therefore moved from the top of its range since 2015 to the bottom.
Why it matters. About 47 in every 1,000 children born alive in Burundi still die before their fifth birthday, so many families continue to face this loss. The fall since 2015 means fewer households carry that risk than a decade ago. For the state, the level sets the demand on maternity wards, vaccination programmes and child clinics.
