In plain words
93.1% of merchandise exports
What it is. This measure divides the value of fuel exports by the value of all goods Algeria sells abroad. It rises and falls with fuel prices and volumes as well as with sales of other goods. Services are outside it, and so are imports, so it describes the make-up of goods exports rather than their size.
Neither way is good in itself. A falling share can come from other exports growing or from fuel sales shrinking, and a rising share can come from higher fuel prices, so a year's move needs the export totals beside it to be judged. The latest figure is 93.1% of merchandise exports, for 2024. That is the lowest in the range since 2009. The highest was 98.4% of merchandise exports in 2012.
Why it matters. At 93.1% of merchandise exports, almost every dollar Algeria earns from selling goods abroad comes from fuel. The state's budget and the foreign currency available to pay for imports therefore follow energy prices closely. Households and firms that rely on imported goods feel those swings. Exporters of other goods account for a small remainder of the total.
