In plain words
0% of merchandise exports
What it is. This measure takes the value of fuel exports and divides it by the value of all goods the country sells abroad. It covers physical goods only, so services such as tourism sit outside the total. The share moves when fuel sales change and also when other goods exports rise or fall, so a small figure can reflect either.
Neither way is good in itself. A high share ties export earnings to fuel prices and a low share means other goods carry the trade, so the direction has meaning only alongside a country's wider economy. The latest figure, for 2023, is 0% of merchandise exports, down from 0.01% of merchandise exports a year earlier, a change of 0.01 percentage points. Since 2013 the share has ranged from 0% of merchandise exports in 2013 to 1.6% of merchandise exports in 2014. The 2023 figure therefore sits at the very bottom of that range, level with the 2013 low.
Why it matters. Fuel contributes essentially nothing to what Comoros earns from selling goods abroad. Export revenue for firms and the state therefore depends on other products, and swings in world fuel prices have almost no direct effect on it.
