In plain words
0.67% of merchandise exports
What it is. This measure takes the value of fuel exports and divides it by the value of all merchandise exports, giving the share that fuel makes up of goods sold abroad. Fuel is one category in the export basket, so the share reflects the mix of what a country ships out. It covers goods only and leaves out services such as tourism.
Neither way is good in itself. The share rises when fuel sales grow or when other exports shrink, and it falls in the opposite cases, so a move in either direction can have a healthy or a worrying cause. The latest figure, for 2023, is 0.67% of merchandise exports, slightly below 0.69% of merchandise exports a year earlier. Since 2014 the range runs from a low of 0.15% of merchandise exports in 2017 to a high of 0.72% of merchandise exports in 2014. The 2023 figure sits close to the top of that range.
Why it matters. Fuel makes up 0.67% of merchandise exports in Botswana, so changes in fuel prices or volumes have little direct effect on national export earnings. Export income, and the government revenue linked to it, depends on the other goods that fill almost all of the country's shipments. Households and firms feel movements in those exports far more than anything in the fuel line.
