In plain words
8.8% of merchandise exports
What it is. This measure takes the value of fuel exports and divides it by the value of all goods the country sells abroad. Fuel covers crude oil, refined products and similar energy goods. Because it is a share, it can fall when fuel sales shrink or when other exports grow faster. It covers goods only and says nothing about the dollar size of fuel sales.
Neither way is good in itself. A high share ties export earnings to energy prices and to output from a few fields and refineries. A low share spreads earnings across other products and also brings in less from fuel. Which of these suits the country depends on what else it sells. The latest figure is 8.8% of merchandise exports for 2025, down 6.4 percentage points from 15.1% a year earlier. It is the lowest reading since 2016 and sits well below the high of 18.5% in 2022.
Why it matters. At 8.8%, fuel prices and output matter less for Côte d'Ivoire's export earnings than they did in 2022. Export earnings bring in the foreign currency that pays for imports, so a smaller fuel share leaves that income resting more on other goods. The state and exporters will want to check whether the 2025 drop reflects weaker fuel sales or stronger sales of other products.
