What it is. This measure shows how much of the value of Burkina Faso's goods exports comes from fuels such as oil, gas and coal. It is a share, so it can fall because other exports grow as well as because fuel sales shrink. It covers goods only, so services earnings sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A high share would mean export income rides on fuel prices, and a low share means earnings come from other goods, so the level describes the structure of trade rather than its quality. The latest figure, for 2024, is 0.02% of merchandise exports, the same as in 2023. Since 2015 the range runs from a low of 0.01% of merchandise exports in 2022 to a high of 1.5% of merchandise exports in 2015. The current level therefore sits close to the bottom of that range.
Why it matters. Fuel brings in almost nothing for Burkina Faso's exporters. Export earnings and the trade-related income of the state depend on other goods, so swings in world fuel prices do little to the value of what the country sells abroad.
