In plain words

17.5%

What it is. The lending interest rate is the price banks in Mozambique charge the private sector for short and medium-term loans. It is an average across loans, so a well-established firm with collateral can pay less than the figure and a small or riskier borrower can pay more. It covers the headline rate on bank credit and leaves out fees, collateral demands and informal or non-bank lending.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher rate pays lenders more for inflation and default risk and costs borrowers more. A lower rate eases borrowing but narrows what banks earn on each loan. Which side looks better depends on whether a household or firm is borrowing or saving. The latest figure is 17.5% in January 2025, down from 21.7% a year earlier, a fall of 4.2 percentage points. Since 2016 the rate has ranged from a high of 27.9% in 2017 to a low of 17.1% in 2020, so today's level sits close to the bottom of that range.

Why it matters. A business seeking a loan in Mozambique now faces a rate of 17.5%, which is still a heavy cost for investment or working capital. The 4.2 point fall over the year lowers repayments on new loans and on those that reprice with the market. Savers and banks earn less on lending than they did a year earlier.
