In plain words
0.34% of GDP
What it is. The current account balance adds up what a country earns from the rest of the world and subtracts what it pays out. It covers trade in goods and services, income on investments and work abroad, and transfers such as remittances. For a country that depends on commodity exports, such as Angola, export prices and volumes drive most of the swings. Borrowing, investment flows and the financing of any gap are recorded in a separate account.
Higher is better. A surplus means the country earns more from abroad than it spends there, which lets it build foreign assets or repay external debt. A deficit has to be financed by borrowing or by drawing down reserves. Angola's latest figure, for 2025, is 0.34% of GDP, down 5.8 percentage points from 6.1% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the balance has ranged from a low of −5.1% of GDP in 2016 to a high of 10.7% of GDP in 2021. The latest reading sits in the lower half of that range, much closer to balance than to the 2021 peak.
Why it matters. A balance of 0.34% of GDP leaves Angola with almost no external surplus to set aside after the larger surpluses of recent years. Foreign currency earned from abroad now roughly matches foreign currency spent, so the state and firms have less room to repay external debt from current earnings. Another fall of the same size as the latest one would return the country to a deficit that needs outside financing.
