In plain words
−3.8% of GDP
What it is. The current account balance nets together what a country earns from abroad and what it pays out. That covers trade in goods and services, income on foreign investment, and transfers such as money sent home by workers overseas. The total is divided by GDP so that years of different economic size can be compared. It leaves out capital flows such as foreign investment and borrowing, which are the means of paying for any gap.
Higher is better. A higher balance means a country earns more from the rest of the world, so it needs to borrow or draw on reserves less to cover its bills. Egypt's balance was −3.8% of GDP in 2025, an improvement of 1.9 percentage points on the −5.7% of GDP recorded a year earlier. Since 2016 the range has run from a low of −6.2% of GDP in 2016 to a high of −2.2% of GDP in 2022. The latest figure sits in the upper part of that range, nearer the 2022 high than the 2016 low. It remains a deficit.
Why it matters. A deficit of −3.8% of GDP means Egypt pays more to the world than it earns, and the difference has to be financed by foreign investment, loans or reserves. When the gap is wide, dollars become harder to obtain, which can raise the cost of imported food, fuel and machinery for households and firms. The narrower gap of 2025 eases that pressure for the state, which still needs steady inflows to cover what remains.
