In plain words
−1.7% of GDP
What it is. The current account adds up a country's trade in goods and services, the income it earns from and pays abroad, and transfers such as money sent home by relatives working overseas. The total is divided by GDP so that years of different economic size can be compared. A negative figure means the country paid abroad more than it received. Borrowing, investment and other financial flows sit in a separate account and are left out.
Higher is better. A higher balance means a country earns more from the rest of the world relative to what it pays out, so it needs less foreign financing to cover the gap. The latest figure, for 2023, is −1.7% of GDP, against −0.41% of GDP a year earlier, so the deficit widened by 1.3 percentage points over the year. Since 2014 the range runs from a low of −4.3% of GDP in 2016 to a high of −0.26% of GDP in 2015. The 2023 reading sits in the upper half of that range, much nearer the best year than the worst.
Why it matters. A deficit of −1.7% of GDP means Comoros paid abroad more than it took in during 2023, and the difference has to be covered by grants, loans or reserves. For households, that can show up as pressure on the cost and availability of imported goods. For the state, a wider gap increases its reliance on external financing and donor support.
