In plain words
14.7% of GDP
What it is. The current account balance adds up what a country earns from the rest of the world and what it pays out. That covers trade in goods and services, income on foreign assets and liabilities, and transfers such as money sent home by workers abroad. The total is divided by GDP so that economies of different sizes can be compared. Borrowing, foreign investment and other financial flows sit in a separate account and are left out.
Higher is better. A higher balance is better because a surplus means the country is earning more abroad than it spends, so it can build up foreign assets or repay debt without new borrowing. Djibouti's latest figure is 14.7% of GDP for 2024, down from 18.5% of GDP in 2023, a fall of 3.8 percentage points. Since 2015 the balance has ranged from a low of −6.6% of GDP in 2021 to a high of 29.5% of GDP in 2015. The 2024 reading sits a little above the middle of that range, well clear of the 2021 deficit and well short of the 2015 peak.
Why it matters. A surplus of this size means Djibouti took in more from abroad than it paid out, which gives firms and the state more room to cover imports and foreign debt payments. The drop from 2023 means that cushion grew thinner over the last year. The next annual reading will show whether the balance keeps falling towards the levels of 2021.
