In plain words
3.6% of GDP
What it is. The current account balance adds up what a country earns from and pays to the rest of the world in goods, services, investment income and transfers such as money sent home by workers abroad. The total is divided by GDP so that economies of different sizes can be compared. A positive figure means more foreign income comes in than goes out. Loans, investment purchases and other capital movements are recorded separately in the financial account.
Higher is better. A surplus means the country earns more abroad than it spends there, so it has less need to borrow from foreigners to pay its way. Cabo Verde's balance was 3.6% of GDP in 2025, down from 3.9% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of −15.7% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 3.9% of GDP in 2024. The latest figure therefore sits just below the top of that range.
Why it matters. A surplus of 3.6% of GDP means the economy is taking in more foreign currency than it pays out. That gives the state and firms more room to meet import bills and service external debt. The 2020 low of −15.7% of GDP shows how far the balance can fall in a bad year, so the next annual reading is the one to check against the 2025 level.
