In plain words

−1.6% of GDP

What it is. The current account balance adds up what a country earns from and pays to the rest of the world in trade in goods and services, income on investments and work abroad, and transfers such as remittances and aid. The total is divided by GDP so that economies of different sizes can be compared. A positive figure means more foreign currency came in than went out. Borrowing and investment flows sit in a separate account, so the balance shows the gap that those flows have to fill.

Higher is better. A higher balance means the country is earning more abroad than it spends, which builds foreign assets and reduces the need to borrow from outside. Guinea's latest figure is −1.6% of GDP for 2024, down 10.1 percentage points from 8.5% of GDP in 2023. Since 2015 the balance has ranged from a low of −31.9% of GDP in 2016 to a high of 27.2% of GDP in 2021. The 2024 reading sits close to the middle of that range, after a year in which the balance moved from surplus into a small deficit.

Why it matters. A deficit of 1.6% of GDP means Guinea paid slightly more to the outside world in 2024 than it received, and the difference has to be covered by foreign borrowing, investment or reserves. That is a far smaller gap than in 2016, so the pressure on the currency and on the state's external financing is lighter than it was then. Households and firms that rely on imported goods and equipment are the first to feel it if the balance weakens again, because foreign currency becomes harder to find.
