In plain words
−7% of GDP
What it is. The current account balance adds up what Mauritius earns from the rest of the world and what it pays out, covering trade in goods and services and the income and transfers that cross the border, such as money sent home by workers. A surplus means the country earns more abroad than it spends, and a deficit means the gap must be met with borrowing or foreign investment. Financial flows such as loans and share purchases sit in the financial account.
Higher is better. A higher balance is better because the country then needs less foreign money to pay its way, which leaves it less exposed to shifts in investor mood. The latest figure, for 2024, is −7% of GDP, against −5% of GDP a year earlier, so the deficit widened by 2.1 percentage points over the year. Since 2015 the balance has ranged from −12.9% of GDP in 2021 to −3.4% of GDP in 2015. The 2024 reading sits nearer the better end of that range, though it has moved away from the 2023 level.
Why it matters. A deficit of −7% of GDP means Mauritius is buying more from abroad than it earns, and the gap has to be financed from overseas. For households, a persistent gap can add pressure on the rupee and raise the cost of imported goods. For the state and for firms, it means relying on steady inflows of foreign investment and borrowing to keep paying for imports.
