In plain words
−2.5% of GDP
What it is. The current account balance adds up what a country earns from the rest of the world and what it pays out. It covers trade in goods and services, income on investments and work abroad, and transfers such as money sent home by workers living overseas. A surplus means the country is a net lender to the world, and a deficit means it must be financed from abroad. The measure is shown as a share of GDP so that years and economies of different size can be compared, and it covers only current flows, so it says nothing about how the gap is funded.
Higher is better. A higher balance is better because the country then depends less on foreign financing to cover its spending abroad. Morocco's balance was −2.5% of GDP in 2025, down from −1.2% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 1.3 percentage points. Since 2016 the balance has ranged from −4.9% of GDP in 2018 to −1% of GDP in 2023. The latest figure sits in the upper half of that range, though well short of the 2023 peak.
Why it matters. A deficit of 2.5% of GDP means Morocco is buying more from abroad than it earns, and the difference has to be met by foreign capital or by drawing on reserves. For firms that import fuel, equipment or inputs, a wider gap can raise exposure to currency and financing conditions. For the state, the widening from 2024 to 2025 makes external funding a point to watch, even though the deficit is far smaller than in 2018.
