In plain words

−14.2% of GDP

What it is. The current account balance adds up what Mozambique earns from and pays to the rest of the world through trade in goods and services, income on investment and labour, and transfers such as remittances and aid. A negative figure means the country spends more abroad than it brings in. The measure is divided by the size of the economy so years can be compared. It covers only the flows of the year, and the way the gap is financed sits in separate capital and financial accounts.

Higher is better. A higher balance is better because a smaller deficit, or a surplus, means less reliance on foreign borrowing, investment inflows or reserves to pay for the country's spending abroad. The latest figure is −14.2% of GDP for 2025, against −11% of GDP a year earlier, so the deficit widened by 3.3 percentage points. Since 2016 the balance has ranged from a low of −33.7% of GDP in 2022 to a high of −10.5% in 2023. The 2025 reading sits much nearer the top of that range than the bottom, though it has moved away from the 2023 peak.

Why it matters. A deficit of 14.2% of GDP has to be financed from abroad through investment, loans or grants. Importers and the state then depend on a steady supply of foreign currency, and the metical's exchange rate is exposed if that supply weakens. For households, this can feed through to the price of imported fuel, food and goods.
