In plain words

−6.1% of GDP

What it is. The current account balance adds up what Niger earns from selling goods and services abroad, income received from overseas and transfers such as remittances and aid, then subtracts what it pays out on the same items. The result is divided by GDP so that years can be compared. Borrowing and investment flows are left out, so the measure shows the size of the gap that foreign financing has to cover.

Higher is better. A higher balance is better because a smaller deficit means Niger relies less on foreign money to pay for what it buys abroad. The latest figure, for 2024, is −6.1% of GDP, up from −13.8% of GDP a year earlier, a gain of 7.7 percentage points. Since 2015 the weakest reading was −16.1% of GDP in 2022. The 2024 figure is the best in that span, so the deficit is at its narrowest since 2015.

Why it matters. A deficit of −6.1% of GDP means Niger still pays out more abroad than it receives, and loans, grants or investment have to cover the difference. The gap is much narrower than the −13.8% of GDP recorded a year earlier, which eases pressure on the state and on firms that pay for imports in foreign currency.
