In plain words

−2.3% of GDP

What it is. The current account balance adds up what a country earns from the rest of the world and what it pays out. It covers trade in goods and services, income received and paid abroad, and transfers such as money sent home by workers overseas. A negative figure means the country spends more abroad than it earns and must borrow or draw on reserves to cover the difference. Loans, investment inflows and other financial flows sit in a separate account.

Higher is better. Higher is better because a smaller deficit, or a surplus, means less reliance on foreign borrowing or reserves to pay for imports. Tunisia's latest figure, for 2025, is −2.3% of GDP, against −1.6% of GDP a year earlier, so the deficit widened by 0.72 percentage points over the year. Since 2016 the balance has ranged from −10.8% of GDP in 2018 to −1.6% of GDP in 2024. The 2025 figure sits near the top of that range and far above the 2018 low, though below the 2024 high.

Why it matters. A deficit of 2.3% of GDP means Tunisia is buying more from abroad than it earns, and the gap has to be financed with foreign loans, transfers or reserves. For households and firms, that links the price and availability of imported fuel, food and inputs to the country's access to foreign currency. For the state, a wider deficit adds to the need for external financing. The 2018 level of 10.8% of GDP shows how much larger that need has been in the past.
