In plain words

22.1% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up everything Algeria buys from abroad, goods such as machinery, food and fuel as well as services such as freight, travel and insurance, and divides the total by the size of the economy. Because GDP is the denominator, the ratio moves with import volumes, import prices, the exchange rate and the value of domestic output. It shows how much of the economy's spending flows to foreign suppliers. Consumer goods and investment goods are counted together in the total.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect strong demand for equipment and consumer goods met from abroad, and a lower share can reflect more domestic production or restrained spending on foreign goods. Which of these applies depends on what is bought and how it is paid for. The latest figure is 22.1% of GDP in 2025, up 1.9 percentage points from 20.3% of GDP a year earlier. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 19.9% of GDP in 2023 to a high of 31.3% of GDP in 2016. The 2025 reading sits much nearer the bottom of that range than the top, and it follows a rise from the 2023 low.

Why it matters. For households, an import share at this level means foreign goods remain a meaningful part of what is on shop shelves. For firms, it shows how much of their equipment and inputs depends on foreign suppliers and on access to foreign currency. For the state, the rise of 1.9 percentage points in 2025 means a larger share of national output is spent abroad, which draws on foreign exchange earnings.
