In plain words

16.7% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up everything residents, firms and the government buy from abroad, from fuel, food and machinery to transport, insurance and travel services, and divides it by the value of the economy's output. Because the ratio is a single total, it combines all those purchases in one figure and carries no detail on what is bought or from whom. It is built to be compared across years and countries of different sizes.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect strong demand for equipment and inputs, or heavy reliance on foreign supply. A lower share can reflect more domestic production, or weaker buying power. The latest figure is 16.7% of GDP for 2025, slightly below 16.9% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.15 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 16.3% of GDP in 2022 to a high of 21.7% of GDP in 2019, so the latest reading sits close to the bottom of that range.

Why it matters. At 16.7% of GDP, a smaller part of Chad's economic activity goes on goods and services from abroad than in 2019, when the share was 21.7% of GDP. Households and firms that depend on imported fuel, food and equipment are exposed to price and supply changes in those goods. For the state, import volumes also feed customs revenue, so shifts in this share can affect what the government collects at the border.
