In plain words
53.4% of GDP
What it is. This measure adds up the value of everything Cabo Verde buys from abroad and divides it by GDP. Goods such as food, fuel and machinery are counted alongside services such as foreign transport and travel. It shows how much of the economy's activity depends on foreign supply. Money that residents receive or pay abroad as income or transfers, such as remittances, sits outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A high share can mean a small island economy that buys much of what it consumes and invests from abroad. A low share can mean more is made at home, or that demand is weak, so the level carries no verdict. The latest figure for 2025 is 53.4% of GDP, down from 54.2% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 0.87 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 53.1% of GDP in 2020 to a high of 60% of GDP in 2018. The current reading therefore sits close to the bottom of that range.
Why it matters. With more than half of GDP matched by foreign purchases, households in Cabo Verde feel changes in world food and fuel prices directly in their shopping and energy bills. Hotels and other firms that serve visitors rely on imported supplies, so their costs follow conditions abroad. The state has to see that foreign earnings from tourism and remittances cover the import bill. The small dip over the past year slightly eases that pressure.
