In plain words

31.6% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up everything Comoros buys from abroad in a year, both goods such as food and fuel and services such as freight and travel, and divides it by the size of the economy. It is a gross figure, so exports are not subtracted. Goods made and sold at home are not counted, and the ratio gives no breakdown of what is imported or who buys it.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean a small island economy has wide access to foreign goods and inputs, and a lower share can mean it relies less on outside supply, so the direction carries no verdict by itself. The latest figure, for 2025, is 31.6% of GDP, down 0.66 percentage points from 32.2% of GDP in 2024. Since 2016 the share has ranged from 26.5% of GDP in 2016 to 37.4% of GDP in 2022. The 2025 reading sits in the middle of that range and well below the 2022 peak.

Why it matters. For households, a share near a third of GDP means much of the food, fuel and manufactured goods they buy arrives through the ports, so shop prices follow shipping and import costs. Firms that depend on imported inputs are exposed to the same costs. The state needs enough foreign exchange to pay for these purchases and collects part of its revenue from duties on them.
