In plain words

11.7% of GDP

What it is. This measure adds up everything residents buy from abroad, from fuel, machinery and food to services such as freight, travel and insurance, and divides it by the size of the economy. It is a gross figure, so exports are not netted off. It says how much of the economy's spending is met from outside the country, but not which goods are involved or how much of their value is added at home. The share can move because imports change or because GDP changes.

Neither way is good in itself. Neither a high nor a low share is good in itself. A high share can mean a country is well supplied with foreign inputs and capital goods, or that it leans heavily on outside suppliers. A low share can mean more is made at home, or that spending and foreign currency are tight. In 2025 the figure was 11.7% of GDP, down from 19% of GDP a year earlier, a fall of 7.3 percentage points. That is the lowest level since 2016, and well below the peak of 23.4% of GDP in 2019.

Why it matters. At 11.7% of GDP, a smaller part of what Angolan households, firms and the state spend goes on foreign goods and services than a year earlier. Shops, factories and public projects that depend on imported supplies are the places to look for the effect, either through fewer purchases or through more local substitutes. The next annual figure will show whether the share stays near this level.
