What it is. Life expectancy at birth is the average number of years a newborn would live if the death rates of one year, at every age, stayed the same for life. It is built from a life table that combines those age-by-age rates into a single figure for the whole population. Because it covers all ages, a bad year for infant deaths, accidents or an epidemic can pull it down quickly. It averages over everyone and leaves out how healthy those years are and how much they differ between groups.
Higher is better. A higher figure means death rates are lower across the ages, so more people live longer. Seychelles reached 76.3 years in 2024, up from 75.4 years a year earlier, a gain of 0.88 years or 1.2%. Since 2015 the lowest figure was 72.8 years in 2018 and the highest was 77.2 years in 2020. The latest reading therefore sits in the upper part of its range, above the 2018 low and just under the 2020 high.
Why it matters. A newborn in Seychelles can now expect about 76.3 years of life, which means more years of adult working life and of retirement for households to plan around.
