In plain words
5.3% y/y
What it is. Real GDP growth measures how much the volume of goods and services produced in Burkina Faso changed over a year. Output is valued at constant prices, so a rise in prices does not inflate the figure. The series comes from World Bank national accounts, which build on the country's own estimates of production. It counts recorded output and leaves out how the gains are shared between households.
Higher is better. Higher is better because faster growth means more output to support jobs, incomes and tax revenue. The latest figure is 5.3% y/y for 2025, up from 4.8% y/y a year earlier, a rise of 0.46 percentage points. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of 1.6% y/y in 2022 to a high of 6.9% y/y in 2021. The 2025 reading sits in the upper part of that range and well above the 2022 trough.
Why it matters. Growth of 5.3% y/y gives firms a larger market to sell into and gives the state a wider base from which to collect taxes. Households benefit most when the extra output reaches wages and farm and business incomes, and when prices stay steady. The 2021 peak of 6.9% y/y is the level to watch for in the next annual reading.
