In plain words
4.2% y/y
What it is. Real GDP growth tracks how much the volume of goods and services produced inside Burundi changes from one year to the next. Output is valued at constant prices, so a rise in prices does not inflate the result. The figure comes from World Bank national accounts and covers one calendar year at a time. It gives the size of the economy's expansion and says nothing about how the gains are shared between households.
Higher is better. Faster growth means more output to support incomes, jobs and tax revenue, so a higher figure is better. The latest reading is 4.2% y/y for 2025, up from 4.1% a year earlier, a rise of 0.13 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 0.31% y/y in 2020 to a high of 5.3% y/y in 2018. The current figure therefore sits in the upper part of that range, a little below the 2018 peak and far above the 2020 trough.
Why it matters. Growth of 4.2% y/y means Burundi's economy is producing more each year, which widens the base for wages, farm and trade income and government tax receipts. The pace is well above the 2020 low, when output barely rose. Whether households feel the gain depends on how it compares with population growth and price rises in the same year.
