In plain words
9.8% y/y
What it is. Real GDP growth is the yearly change in the total value of goods and services produced in Ethiopia, measured at constant prices so that rising prices do not inflate the result. The World Bank compiles it from national accounts. It leaves out how income is shared, unpaid household work and damage to the environment.
Higher is better. Higher is better because faster growth means more output and income for a population that needs jobs and services. The latest figure for 2025 is 9.8% y/y, up from 7.6% a year earlier, a rise of 2.2 percentage points. That is the highest reading since 2016, the start of the range. The lowest in the same span was 5.3% y/y in 2022.
Why it matters. Growth of 9.8% gives the state a larger economy to draw tax revenue from and gives firms more demand for what they sell. Whether households feel the gain depends on prices and wages, which sit outside this measure.
