In plain words
13.4% y/y
What it is. Real GDP growth measures how much the volume of goods and services produced in Libya changed from one year to the next, with price changes removed. The World Bank builds it from national accounts at constant prices. It counts recorded output and leaves out how income is shared and any activity that goes unrecorded. Because the base is one economy with large swings in output, a single year's rate can move a long way.
Higher is better. Faster growth means more output and income for an economy to share, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure, for 2025, is 13.4% y/y, up from 1.9% a year earlier, a rise of 11.5 percentage points. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of −29.5% y/y in 2020 to a high of 32.5% y/y in 2017. The 2025 reading sits in the upper half of that range.
Why it matters. Growth of 13.4% y/y means Libya's economy produced markedly more in 2025 than a year before, which can feed through to wages, business activity and government revenue. A rise from 1.9% y/y in 2024 follows a period that included a fall of −29.5% y/y in 2020, so part of the gain may be recovery of lost output. Households and firms would want to see whether the next annual figure holds near this level.
