In plain words
−0.52% y/y
What it is. Real GDP growth is the yearly change in the total value of goods and services produced in Mozambique, with price changes stripped out by valuing output at constant prices. The World Bank compiles it from national accounts, so it reflects what statisticians can count or estimate across farming, industry and services. It says nothing about how income is shared, the value of unpaid household work, or the depletion of natural resources.
Higher is better. Higher growth means more output to support jobs, wages and tax revenue, while a negative figure means the economy produced less than the year before. The latest figure, for 2025, is −0.52% y/y, down from 2.1% y/y a year earlier, a fall of 2.7 percentage points. Since 2016 the series has ranged from −1.2% y/y in 2020 to 5.5% y/y in 2023. The 2025 reading sits much nearer the bottom of that range than the top.
Why it matters. A small contraction means Mozambican firms are selling slightly less in total than a year ago, which limits hiring and new investment. Households see fewer openings for extra work or higher pay. The state has less growth to draw on for tax revenue, which tightens the budget for public services and debt payments.
