In plain words
7% y/y
What it is. Real GDP growth tracks how much the volume of goods and services produced in Niger changes from one year to the next. National accounts value output at constant prices, so rising prices do not inflate the figure. It covers output inside the country's borders and says nothing about how income is shared between households or how growth compares with the number of people.
Higher is better. Higher is better because faster growth means more output to support jobs, incomes and tax revenue. Growth in 2025 was 7% y/y, down from 8.3% y/y in 2024, a fall of 1.3 percentage points. Since 2016 the series has ranged from 1.1% y/y in 2021 to 12.2% y/y in 2022. The latest figure sits in the upper part of that range, well above the 2021 low and below the 2022 peak.
Why it matters. At 7% y/y, Niger's economy is adding output quickly, which widens the base for wages, business sales and government tax receipts. The easing from 8.3% y/y a year earlier means those gains are arriving at a slower pace. Households and firms feel the result through jobs and incomes, and the state through revenue available for public spending.
