In plain words

4% y/y

What it is. This series tracks the yearly change in Nigeria's total output of goods and services, valued at constant prices so that inflation is stripped out and only the volume of production moves the figure. It comes from World Bank national accounts and covers the whole economy as a single total. It does not adjust for population size or show how income is shared between households. Quarterly national releases are a separate indicator.

Higher is better. Faster growth means the economy is producing more, which supports incomes, jobs and tax revenue, so a higher figure is better. The latest figure is 4% y/y for 2025, a little under the 4.1% y/y recorded for 2024. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of −6.4% y/y in 2020 to a high of 4.3% y/y in 2022. The latest reading sits close to the top of that range and well above the 2020 trough.

Why it matters. Growth of 4% y/y means Nigeria's economy is adding to its output each year, which supports sales for firms, jobs and the tax base the state draws on. Households gain from this only where incomes keep ahead of prices and population growth. The next annual reading will show whether growth holds near the 2022 peak of 4.3% y/y.
