In plain words

8.1% y/y

What it is. Real GDP growth is the yearly change in the total value of goods and services produced in Zimbabwe, measured at constant prices so that rising prices do not inflate the result. The World Bank compiles it from national accounts. It covers recorded output and leaves out how that output is shared between households, and activity in the informal economy is only partly captured.

Higher is better. Higher is better because faster growth means more output, income and work to go round, while a contraction shrinks all three. Growth in 2025 was 8.1% y/y, up from 1.7% y/y a year earlier, a rise of 6.4 percentage points. Since 2016 the series has ranged from a low of −7.8% y/y in 2020 to a high of 8.5% y/y in 2021. The latest figure sits just below the top of that range.

Why it matters. Growth of 8.1% y/y means the Zimbabwean economy is producing considerably more than a year earlier, which can widen household incomes, lift firms' sales and raise the tax revenue available to the state. The swing from 2024 is large, so the next annual release will show whether this pace holds.
