In plain words
75.8% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of Algeria's people who live in places classed as urban. It divides the urban population by the total population. Each country draws its own line between urban and rural, so the figure follows Algeria's own classification. It says nothing about the size of the towns, the quality of housing or how people earn a living.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can reflect people moving to towns for work and services. It can also mean pressure on city housing and infrastructure, so the direction carries no verdict on its own. The latest figure, for 2025, is 75.8% of population, up from 75.3% a year earlier, a rise of 0.54 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from a low of 70.7% of population to the current 75.8% of population, so the latest reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. With most Algerians living in towns and cities, demand for housing and public transport is concentrated in urban areas. Schools, clinics and water networks in those areas serve a growing share of the population. Rural communities make up a smaller part of the country each year, which shapes where the state and employers place their investment.
