In plain words
77.6% of population
What it is. This measure is the share of all residents who live in areas classed as urban. It is built by dividing the urban population by the total population, so it describes where people live and says nothing about how well those places are served. The boundary between urban and rural is drawn by the country's own classification, so the figure follows that line.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share means more people live in towns and a lower share means more live in the countryside. Whether either helps depends on the jobs and housing that towns can offer. The latest figure, for 2025, is 77.6% of population, up from 76.8% a year earlier, a rise of 0.86 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from 68% of population in 2016 to 77.6% of population in 2025, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range.
Why it matters. With 77.6% of population living in urban areas, most households in Cabo Verde depend on town labour markets, rented or owned urban housing and public services delivered in dense settlements. Local authorities and the state face rising demand for water, transport and homes where people are concentrating. Rural areas hold a smaller and shrinking share of residents.
