In plain words

33.9% of population

What it is. Urban population is the share of all residents who live in places their country classes as urban. Each country draws that line itself, so the figure follows Comoros's own definition of a town and cannot be lined up exactly against another country's. It tells you where people live. It says nothing about how big the towns are, how good the housing is, or whether jobs and services keep pace with the people arriving.

Neither way is good in itself. A rising urban share can reflect people moving for work, schooling or health care, and it can also put pressure on housing, water and roads. A falling share carries its own mix of causes and consequences. For that reason the direction alone carries no verdict. The latest figure, for January 2025, is 33.9% of population, up from 33.5% of population a year earlier, a rise of 0.4 percentage points. Since 2016 the range runs from a low of 30.7% of population in January 2016 to the current 33.9% of population, so the latest reading sits at the top of its range.

Why it matters. Most Comorians still live outside towns, so farming and fishing villages remain the everyday setting for the majority. The slow rise in the urban share adds steady demand for housing, water, electricity and schools in the towns. Local authorities and the state have to plan for that demand each year, and households moving in need work that pays enough to cover urban living costs.
