In plain words
53.4% of population
What it is. This measure gives the share of Benin's people who live in places classed as urban. It is built by applying the national definition of an urban area to population counts and projections, then dividing the urban total by the whole population. Each country sets its own threshold for what counts as urban, so figures across borders carry that variation. It leaves out the size of towns, the quality of housing and how well residents are served.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher urban share reflects where people live and work. Whether that helps depends on whether jobs, homes and services in towns keep pace, which is why the page treats the measure as neutral. The latest figure is 53.4% of population in January 2025, up from 52.5% of population a year earlier, a rise of 0.82 percentage points. Since 2016 the share has ranged from 46.6% of population at the start of the window to 53.4% of population now, so the latest reading is the highest in that span.
Why it matters. With a little over half of Benin's people now living in urban areas, towns carry a large share of demand for housing, water, transport and paid work. Households that move to town often gain access to schools, clinics and wider job markets, and they also face higher rents and living costs. For the state, a steadily rising share means planning roads, drainage and public services for urban populations that grow each year.
