In plain words
92.1 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before reaching their fifth birthday, expressed per 1,000 live births. It combines deaths in the first month, the rest of the first year and the following four years into one rate, so it responds to newborn care, infectious disease, nutrition and access to clinics together. Stillbirths fall outside the count because the base is live births, and children who survive but live with illness or poor health are also left out.
Lower is better. A lower rate means more children survive to their fifth birthday, so a falling figure is good news. Guinea's latest figure, for 2024, is 92.1 per 1,000 live births. A year earlier, in 2023, it was 95 per 1,000 live births, a fall of 2.9 per 1,000 live births, or 3.1%. The 2024 figure is the lowest since 2015, when the rate stood at its highest in the window, 113.7 per 1,000 live births.
Why it matters. Roughly 92 of every 1,000 children born alive in Guinea die before turning five, so child loss remains a real prospect for many families. Households carry that risk through the cost and distance of reaching care for fevers, diarrhoea and difficult births. For the state, every further fall depends on keeping vaccination, maternal care and primary clinics within reach of rural communities.
