In plain words
62.4 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before the fifth birthday, expressed per 1,000 live births. It folds deaths in the first month, the rest of infancy and early childhood into one rate, so it responds to childbirth care, nutrition, infectious disease and access to clinics together. It counts deaths only, so it carries no information on children who survive in poor health, on causes of death or on differences between regions and income groups.
Lower is better. Every unit lower is fewer children lost before their fifth birthday, which is why a falling rate is the better outcome. The latest figure, for 2024, is 62.4 per 1,000 live births, down from 63.6 per 1,000 live births in 2023. That is a fall of 1.9%. Since 2015 the series has ranged from a high of 65.3 in 2015 to a low of 62.4, so the latest reading is the lowest in that span.
Why it matters. In Madagascar, 62 of every 1,000 children born alive do not reach their fifth birthday, so many families still face the risk of losing a young child. For the state, that keeps pressure on maternal and child health services, such as delivery care, vaccination and the treatment of common childhood illnesses. The fall from 65.3 in 2015 to 62.4 is steady, and the next annual estimate will show whether it continues.
