In plain words

36.5 per 1,000 live births

What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before their fifth birthday, counted per 1,000 live births. It combines deaths in the first month, the rest of the first year and the following four years into one rate, so it responds to newborn care, nutrition, vaccination and disease control together. It leaves out stillbirths and the causes behind each death.

Lower is better. Each fall in this rate means more children in a birth cohort reach their fifth birthday, which is why a falling figure is welcome. The latest figure for 2024 is 36.5 per 1,000 live births, down from 38.2 per 1,000 live births a year earlier, a drop of 4.5%. Since 2015 the rate has stood at its lowest in 2024, and the highest figure in that span was 52.2 per 1,000 live births in 2015.

Why it matters. At 36.5 per 1,000 live births, a Senegalese child born in 2024 faces a clearly lower risk of dying before five than a child born in 2015, when the rate was 52.2 per 1,000 live births. For households this means fewer families losing a young child. For the state, the rate is a guide to how far maternal, newborn and child health services reach, and the next annual figure will show whether the fall continues.
