In plain words
101.1 per 1,000 live births
What it is. Under-five mortality is the probability that a child born alive dies before turning five, expressed per 1,000 live births. It combines the risk of dying at each age from birth through early childhood into one figure for a given year, so it reflects newborn, infant and toddler deaths together. It counts deaths from every cause, including disease, malnutrition and injury, and leaves out stillbirths.
Lower is better. Each point lower means fewer children dying before their fifth birthday, which is why a falling figure is good news. Somalia's latest figure, for 2024, is 101.1 per 1,000 live births, down from 104.3 per 1,000 live births a year earlier, a fall of 3.1%. That is the lowest reading since 2015. The highest in the same span was 156.4 per 1,000 live births in 2017.
Why it matters. For every 1,000 babies born alive in Somalia, 101.1 die before their fifth birthday, so child loss is a common experience for families. Clinics, vaccination programmes, clean water and nutrition support carry much of the weight in bringing that level down. The state and its aid partners can check progress against the 2024 figure when the next annual estimate arrives.
