What it is. This measure shows how much of the value of goods a country sells abroad is fuel, such as petroleum products. It divides the value of fuel exports by total merchandise exports. Services such as tourism and financial services are outside the total, so it describes only the goods basket. A small share can come from a few cargoes, so it can move sharply from year to year.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share means fuel carries more weight in what the country sells abroad, and a lower share means goods exports rest on other products. Which one suits an economy depends on its resources and strategy. In 2025 the figure was 0% of merchandise exports, the same as in 2024, a change of 0 percentage points. Since 2016 the highest reading was 1.6% of merchandise exports in 2017, and the lowest was 0% of merchandise exports in 2021. The latest figure therefore sits at the bottom of its range for the period.
Why it matters. Fuel contributes nothing to Mauritius's goods export earnings at present, so swings in oil prices do little to change what exporters bring in. Export income from goods depends on other products. Even at its 2017 peak, fuel was only a small slice of the goods basket.
