In plain words
32.7% of merchandise exports
What it is. This measure shows how much of the value of Senegal's goods sold abroad comes from fuel. It is a share, so it rises when fuel sales grow and also when other exports fall. Services such as tourism and the absolute value of fuel sales sit outside it.
Neither way is good in itself. A higher share ties export earnings to energy markets and their price swings. A lower share spreads earnings across a wider range of goods. The latest figure, for 2024, is 32.7% of merchandise exports, up from 21.5% of merchandise exports in 2023, a rise of 11.2 percentage points in a year. That is the highest reading since 2015. The lowest in the same span was 10.7% of merchandise exports, in 2016.
Why it matters. With 32.7% of merchandise exports now coming from fuel, Senegal's earnings of foreign currency depend more heavily on energy volumes and prices than they did a year earlier. Firms in other export lines make up a smaller part of the goods trade. The state has a larger energy-linked source of income and trade balance to watch from year to year.
