In plain words

6.2% of merchandise exports

What it is. This measure divides the value of fuel exports by the value of all goods sold abroad. Fuel covers oil, gas and refined products. Because it is a share, it moves when fuel sales change and also when other exports grow or shrink. Services such as tourism are outside it, since it covers goods only.

Neither way is good in itself. A higher share can mean fuel earnings are rising or that other exports are shrinking, and a lower share can mean broader exports or weaker fuel sales, so the direction alone says little. Tunisia's latest figure is 6.2% of merchandise exports in 2024, the same as the 6.2% of merchandise exports in 2023, a change of 0.02 percentage points. Since 2015 the share has ranged from a low of 5.5% of merchandise exports in 2019 to a high of 8% of merchandise exports in 2022. The current level sits in the lower half of that range, closer to the 2019 low than to the 2022 peak.

Why it matters. With fuel at 6.2% of merchandise exports, most of Tunisia's goods export income comes from other products. Swings in fuel prices therefore move the national export total only modestly. Exporters of other goods carry most of the weight for foreign currency earnings, and the 2022 peak shows how much larger fuel's part can become in a stronger year.
